Pouf Pin: Here We Go!

Let the DIY journey begin!

The mid-century modern style that has come back full swing in home design has brought some amazing pieces of furniture with it. Among these are the adorable “poufs”; used for footrests, small stools, or floor cushions. If you’re flipping through a Crate and Barrel or CB2 catalog you’re more than likely going to see one just like the one below for around $90.00; before shipping and handling.

If you’re anything like me, $90.00 is a bit of a stretch, no matter how cute the pouf. So, when I found a DIY Pouf on Pinterest, I got so excited and quickly pinned it to my DIY board. My husband and I have been excitedly working on our baby’s nursery and we thought a soft pouf would be a perfect addition. The color scheme in the baby’s room is a soft gray, bright green, navy and white. With all that in mind, I decided to make our little boy a green pouf and also make it my first blog project.

I went to Michael’s Crafts and with two coupons purchased size 15 needles and the thickest and softest yarn they had in a green color I liked. For $10.03, I walked out of Michael’s happily swinging my plastic bag. The DIY calls for you to cast on 35 stitches and knit a garter stitch until you have the desired length. However many rows you knit will be how tall or poufed the pouf will be. Once you are finished, they recommend stuffing it with a duvet or several pillows. I happened to have two inexpensive standard size pillows from IKEA ($.99 each) that I plan on using as the stuffing.

Yarn, knitting needles, and two pillows for stuffing.

So, last night I cast on my 35 stitches and have officially begun the Pinterest Pouf Project. More pictures to follow!

A Pinterest Interest

The conversation had lulled to that quiet moment where everyone under the age of 35 pulls out their iPhone, Android, or touch-screen-doo-hickey and searches for the next conversation topic. I was scrolling through a few recent pictures I had snapped when one of the girls asked me, “Do you have Pinterest Rachel?”

Oh, it was such a simple question!

My response was equally simple, “Pinter-what?” My friend went on to explain the intricacies of the newest social media website; assuring me that it was far less wasteful than the likes of Twitter or Facebook.

I held out for as long as I could…I really did! At first I heroically balked at the idea, proclaiming that I didn’t need another time-suck. But my ruthless curiosity was peeked. Why wouldn’t it be? I mean after the initial innocent question, it seemed like everyone was talking about it. Everyone might be a slight exaggeration, but it was certainly enought to make my ears hear twice as well whenever it was menitoned.

So, needless to say, I succumbed to my desire of being included in the convo and set up my very own Pinterest account. (So much for any talk about maintaining individuality!) And after the first few days of feeling like I was brushing my teeth with my left hand, I figured out how the website works. And? Well I guess you can give me the official button: I Am Pinned to Pinterset.

I can honestly say that I’m not too terribly interested in most of the sections Pinterest offers. However, the one area that I cannot seem to remove my pinner finger from is the Do It Yourself pins. It’s so fascinating!

I am completely hooked on the amazing and crafty things that the cleverest of people create. I mean seriously, have you ever thought about turning the bottom of a two 2 Liter bottles into a coin purse? Or making an elaborate light fixture out of plastic spoons? Or making a picture collage from a fruit pallet, twine and clothes pins? Wow!

However, despite how truly sensational people’s craftiness is, I did not want Pinterest to become another Facebook black hole. Therefore, drum roll please, I have decided to DIY my DIYs. I created this blog to take you on my own craftiness journey of recreating the amazing DIY projects I have pinned to on Pinterest. Hence the blog name “DIYing My DIYs.”

I’d like to say I’m quite the artistic and crafty one, but these projects may prove to be a true test of the left side of my brain. My hope is to create something every week to two weeks and share with you my progress and techniques. You are welcome to laugh with me or at me, and maybe even join me if you catch the craftiness bug. Either way, I hope you enjoy my DIY journeys!
